SoCal’s family-friendly reputation precedes it, with no shortage of kids’ club-touting resorts strung along the coastline. But newcomer Lido House, now part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection and nestled in Newport Beach’s marina, is different. More of an urban boutique hotel, with an exterior reminiscent of Cape Cod, the property manages to feel both fresh and family-friendly at once. That’s in part thanks to five thoughtfully designed three-story cottages onsite, which prove an ideal setup for parents with young children or larger groups. While I wasn’t blown away by the room or the service, and I was outright disappointed at their treatment of Bonvoy Elites, the hotel did have a lot of things going for it.

In fact, the idea for the Gardiner House began with the couple’s love of entertaining and blossomed from there. They found a pier off busy Thames Street with a parking lot for sale, convinced weary locals that their hotel, bar, and restaurant would be a better asset to the town than a parking lot, and won approval to build. The building housing the hotel is new, but the interior spaces seem as if they’ve been here all along. A boutique coffee shop attached to Lido House, Crew Coffee + Cremerie serves the same blends available at the hotel, plus several flavors of ice cream and chocolate-covered ice cream pops. The interior is more spacious than expected, with a high, domed ceiling, communal tables that offer plenty of seating, neutral tones that calm and relax, and everywhere, splashes of beachy décor.

The location was great because Newport Beach is great. The hotel’s dining options were also impressive, with The Mayor’s Table being a true gem (for breakfast & dinner) with a gorgeous bar. Also great was Newport Beach’s only rooftop bar and the overall nautical decor of the hotel.

There’s also a rooftop bar, a prime spot since it’s the only such space in all of Newport Beach. Topside is (most obviously) a beach-inspired oasis on the top of Lido House. The rooftop bar and lounge boasts ocean views, pool views and everywhere, boho-chic design.
It honestly worked out so well and gave us a well deserved break a few times a day to enjoy the gorgeous Lido House property. Crystal Cove State Park is a regional gem for hiking and exploring. The El Moro Canyon trail is especially beautiful in spring with wildflowers, but does feature some incline.
